thank you Annie, for posting about this)

it's already been written

what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
what'll you do now, my darling young one?

I'm going back out before the rain starts falling,
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
and the executioner's face is always well hidden,
where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
where black is the color, where none is the number,
and I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
and reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinking,
but I'll know my song well before I start singing,

....It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

-bob dylan

(i have this terrible habit of wanting to call bob dylan by something more ...familiar; i want to call him by a nickname. "Bobby D" seems to surface a lot, or "B.D." or "B. Dylan." ...like i know him. i sort of feel like i do, sometimes. only sometimes though)

"what the world eats"

My Dad sent me an email this morning about an interesting project
that looks at different countries and how much they eat and spend on food in one week. I forwarded it on to a few friends, and my friend Carrie asked me to make a post out of it.
I didn't know until Jeff Schaefer kindly informed me that this appeared in a book called Hungary Planet: What the World Eats. It also appeared on Relevant magazine's website recently.
It really makes you think...

Italy: The Manzo family of Sicily
Food expenditure for one week: 214.36 Euros or $260.11

Germany: The Melander family of Bargteheide
Food expenditure for one week: 375.39 Euros or $500.07

United States: The Revis family of North Carolina
Food expenditure for one week $341.98

Mexico: The Casales family of Cuernavaca
Food expenditure for one week: 1,862.78 Mexican Pesos or $189.09

Poland: The Sobczynscy family of Konstancin-Jeziorna
Food expenditure for one week: 582.48 Zlotys or $151.27ef

Egypt: The Ahmed family of Cairo
Food expenditure for one week: 387.85 Egyptian Pounds or $68.53

Ecuador: The Ayme family of Tingo
Food expenditure for one week: $31.55

Bhutan: The Namgay family of Shingkhey Village
Food expenditure for one week: 224.93 ngultrum or $5.03

Chad: The Aboubakar family of Breidjing Camp
Food expenditure for one week: 685 CFA Francs or $1.23

if you're like me, this is pretty unsettling. it makes you count your blessings, to be sure, but it also makes me feel really guilty. it just doesn't seem right to sit over here in the lap of luxury while half the world lives off of less than two dollars a day...

emily's magical backyard

there is an admitted shortage of yardspace here in southern california, and so whenever i am able to get back up to seattle, i am always so very delighted to see and spend time in my best friend emily's parents' gyNORmous backyard.
on top of being twice the size of the space that the house takes up, the yard is filled with wonderous little creatures and details.

this little monkey creeps me out a little, but i still appreciate him:

her name is Olga. emily and i have a joke about Olga that goes back to middle school, before this little statue was even present in the yard. the spiky plant is fitting, i will also add.

sweet little faded gnomie gnome. !!

there is a huge (over ten feet tall, i'd say) hedge in the shape of a very round man holding a bird. he inspires and delights me.

*sigh*

straight out of a storybook

amy, this one reminds me of you, because of your snail nigel. who i have never actually seen in person. ha.

forever my heart will sing of how great you are

i usually resist sudden urges to blog about something even resembling ramblings of a personal nature, but i can't help it tonight.

tonight, i met up with an old friend from high school, a guy i knew pretty well who was nice and funny and brilliant, but also just angry deep down and spiritually confused.
this is a friend i prayed for throughout high school and into college even between the sporadic meetings we accidentally had every so often.
in the past couple of months, he has undergone a miraculous transformation- he has accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior, been baptized, and is now one of the most incredible people I know.
He's like an entirely different person- He absolutely glows. He's happier than I've ever seen him, and he's quoting scripture and giving God the glory left and right for the changes in his life and his heart and the things he hopes to do with his life from now on. He's always been really into music, and now he hopes to use his passion to bring glory to God.
It has been so encouraging, and so humbling, to see the transformation that has taken place in the life of someone I always thought was "too far gone."

God is good.
after everything, God is still good.

i think i'm learning not to limit God. not to make excuses for things happening or not happening that are beyond my understanding.
i'm learning to pray with purpose, and trust that my prayers are powerful and effective and can change things. that He is empowering me, and directing my foot steps.
and He wants the same for your life, too.

"What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead."
philipians 3:8-11

some seattle pics!

i went to seattle last weekend for my best friend emily's bridal shower. unfortunately she woke up in the middle of the night friday night and was really sick, and stayed sick all day saturday. she ended up having to cancel her shower. it would have been pretty terrible, but her mom let me borrow her car and i went to a friend's birthday party i had been invited to.

this is jon paul and riley. when they came down to visit me in september, they happened to come the weekend of my birthday party. riley said his "reputation depends on" him writing and singing a song at birthday parties, so he and jon paul did that for me, and it was really nice of them. and funny, and entertaining.
well, annabelle, jon paul's younger sister, was turning 16, so they did the same for her.

the chorus went something like: "you're sixteen, meaningful chorus! you're sixteen today, and sixteen tomorrow!"

annabelle is mature beyond her years. i'm happy to have spent some time with her on my last couple of visits.

annabelle's little brother came out of nowhere and stole my view. but it turned out to work for me.

this is nate, who i have known (but not reeeeally known) since 7th grade or so. he's cool.

and riley,

jeffrey. the memories! junior high camps galore.

riley is really good at making crazy faces. really good.

jeffrey + nick = so. much. hair.

it was fun catching up with evan. i can't believe he's so tall! and in college now!

NICK TAYLOR took this one! yes he did! and thank you Nick, as it has inspired me to do a series on people with cups.

this is shay's girlfriend ashley, who i had heard so many great things about for so long but never met. well, i finally met her, and she was really nice.

this is michael. i met him once before, in july i think. he's in riley's band. i think.

i didn't really feel like dancing, but everyone else did. so i took some pictures which turned out kinda neat since there was a blacklight. here is everyone doing the dance to "soldier boy"

riley wanted me to take a "normal looking one"

then we went outside, where i froze half to death

i'm sorry emily was sick, but it was still good to see her, talk, and be able to see other friends, and my mom and sister. and i just love going to visit seattle, too.
i'll put up more pictures from the city soon.

there's a good chance this will be entirely uninteresting to you,

but i wanted to post it anyway.
i made a playlist with my favorite radiohead songs.
here it is (there are a lot because i happen to really like radiohead):

and some thom yorke quotes i particularly enjoy:
"Being in a band turns you into a child and keeps you there."
"It's easy to be miserable. Being happy is tougher - and cooler."

and jonny greenwood:
"I'd happily talk about nothing."

also!
i will be posting pictures from my trip to seattle very soon!
(maybe even tomorrow)
