Valentine's Gift Ideas

There are plenty of things to dislike about Valentine's Day: Hyper-commercialism. That aisle at the grocery store, or Target, or a lot of stores, where pink and red and hearts dominate. Hyper-attention to your very single status. Unwanted stress on a delicate, newly budding romance.

In spite of all the reasons to hate it, I love Valentine's Day. I say this as a very single woman, btw. This is my first Valentine's Day in four years that I'll be spending alone, and instead of dreading its approach, I'm surprisingly excited about it. Remember elementary school? When you get excited about the cards and the candy and the chocolate? I have the same sort of excitement, only not about any of those things. I'm just excited by the fact that at its core, apart from the hyper-commercialism, Valentine's Day is a holiday completely centered on love. Let's love. Period. It's maybe a little sad that we need the reminders of some holidays like this one and Thanksgiving (reminder: be thankful), and sure it's a little sad that love to a lot of people equals red and pink hearts and chocolates and roses (but hopefully not only those things), but maybe we, just by human nature, need to be reminded every year, and hopefully the annual reminder spills into our lives many many other points during the year.

Made in Dagenham

Today's styling inspiration comes from the 2010 film Made in Dagenham. The film is set in 1960s England involving an all-female branch of Ford Motor Company, where the women workers stage a strike to protest gender discrimination, and stars Sally Hawkins (along with Rosamund Pike, who is clearly one of my faves as she keeps appearing in these posts).

The costuming features bright colors, big florals, A-line skirts, and short hemlines--- elements that can be easily incorporated into today's trends.

31 Bits and Krochet Kids International are Orange County based nonprofits I've become familiar with in the past couple years (we did a Christmas gift guide that included both of them when I worked at The OC Gazette Magazine). I received an awesome Krochet Kids knit laptop case from my sister in law for Christmas that year after putting it on my list, but that Christmas and this past Christmas I put some things from both 31 Bits and Krochet Kids on my list that I didn't get, so I dipped into my generosity fund (a portion of my income I devote to being an actively more generous person) and got myself some things.

I'm aware that true generosity probably ought not involve a payback for me (in this case necklaces and a tote bag), but I couldn't resist this time around. It's not a habit I encourage myself to regularly do, but I felt good about doing it this time. Besides, both nonprofits represent great causes I really believe in, so I want to support them.

Elsie Larson blogged recently about Radiant Cosmetics (an organization that focuses on fighting human trafficking in the world by supporting justice initiatives through the sale of cosmetics), and I was inspired to share these other great organizations with you. I think we can all make an impact-- not "only" through donating time or money (both awesome ways to help!), but also through the things we choose to spend money on and the missions we support in the process.

Interview Apparel

Interview outfit by helloblythe featuring a knee length pencil skirt

I had an interview this week at a company that I would really, really love to work for. When I first heard the job description, I had the rare feeling that I would be perfect for the job, and when I landed an interview, I was overjoyed. My main trouble was choosing the perfect interview outfit; I needed to look business casual, while simultaneously being very fashion forward. You'd understand if I told you the company and the position, but I'm going to hold off on that for now.

Anywho, above is the look I came up with: a silky but structured collared top from Madewell's spring collection in a bright poppin' purple (a color I seldom wear, but secretly adore), a chambray pencil skirt from H&M (a friend and I debated over whether it was too casual, but I ended up sticking with it), a silver envelope clutch from Madewell (couldn't find it on Polyvore, so I used a similar one from Zara for the mood board), glittery croquet shoes from Aldo, a tiny chambray bow from H&M pinned onto my collar (similar to the one above, but without the stones), and a brushed "gold" stone ring from Banana Republic (similar to the one above).

SEEING --- a photography class by Shannon Leith

I had the wonderful privilege of attending my dear friend Shannon Leith's SEEING classes last Saturday, and wanted to share a bit about that with you. SEEING is a photo class that helps people discover their unique vision; it's a photography class that takes a fresh approach. Through a ten week experience, Shannon teaches you how your eyes see light and how to tap into your own unique vision of the world. She helps you gain confidence in your vision as an artist through both group sessions and one-on-one mentoring.

The day started at 10am and was filled with amazing exercises in seeing light, learning to slow down, be patient, and push ourselves to see things differently. We spent a good chunk of time with a white vase-- walking around it, seeing how the light hit it differently when we stood in different places, and the things our changed perspectives caused us to notice. At one point, I was struck with [slightly terrified] awe at the realization of the millions of possibilities that exist with just a white vase. To me, that translated into infinite possibilities for myself, for my art, and for my whole life.

The day lasted till 5pm and was filled with other amazing things like lunch at Heirloom Cafe, portraiture in the courtyard nearby, and a solitary walk with our cameras in hand.

It was an incredible day-- not only because I got to see my marvelous best friend do one of the things she does so very well, but also because I stepped further into my unique vision of the world and what is beautiful in it specifically to me. Below are a few photos from the day, including some of my favorite things Shannon said during our time together.

(btw I made that bread! It was my first go at it, and it turned out awesome! I've made two more loaves since! I use this recipe ....that calls for 8-18 hours for the bread to rise)

An Education

Tonight I'm inspired by the costumes in the 2009 film An Education, featuring my girl Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard (Rosamund Pike, another fave, also). The film is set in 1960s suburban London, and the outfits shift between English schoolgirl and London socialite. Brocade shifts, voluminous updos, oversized hats, and other delightful '60s nuances make appearances in the film.

On Creative Comparison

Do you ever look at certain people you know (or maybe you don't know, but have seen online and have that false sense of knowing) --people who are doing amazingly creative things-- and wonder how they got to be doing those things and doing them so well and wondering when, or if, you'll ever get to that place of prolific and beautiful creativity?

I'm not usually one to suffer from the symptoms caused by comparing ourselves to other people, but when it comes to creativity, I admit I fall into the trap. I'm surrounded by creative people in my daily life and in the blogs and sites I follow for inspiration, but sometimes instead of being inspired I feel discouraged. Is there any room for more creativity? Is it possible to add something original and worthwhile to the pot? And what would I add? And how do I get to the point of sustaining myself with creative work? All these questions bog me down until I surrender to some delightfully mindless activity, like watching more episodes of 30 Rock than I care to admit.

Lately, I've been really inspired by Kinfolk Magazine, and even sent a submission inquiry email yesterday, containing some of the photos in this post, but I've noticed in myself lately a hesitancy to let myself hope too much. It was hard for me to send that email. Hoping much very often means being much disappointed, and I am a person who allows disappointment to sink deep into my bones and knock me out of the ring for longer than most people. Many of my friends are choosing one word for 2012 and all they want it to mean, and I haven't settled on my one word, but I imagine it would/should be something to do with hope or joy: allowing myself to hope means opening myself up to the potential for disappointment, but it also allows me the possibility of deeply gratifying joy.

I'm an IDEAS person: I come up with all these grand ideas (build a desk, make a quilt, shoot a cookbook, start a goat farm, write a book about upcycling your clothes, the "necket"...etc etc), but rarely begin to act on the ideas, and even more rarely follow through and see them to completion. I'm realizing the importance of partnership in creativity--- having someone to bounce ideas off of; someone who will help me get started or at least fuel the fire of excitement by encouraging me and talking through practicalities with me.

Kinfolk's manifesto is a celebration of gathering together-- eating together, talking together, collaborating, and enjoying life together. As I begin 2012, I look forward to putting myself out there, allowing myself to hope, and embracing new partnerships and creative collaborations.

So, is there any room for more creativity? Yes. And we are at our most creative when we're together, instead of sitting in our homes at our laptops and comparing our projects to one others'.

2011: A Year in Photos

It's that time of year....the beginning! Which means it's time to take a look back on the year that just ended. I give you, the 4th Annual Year in Photos:

January- I went to Seattle with Jordan and got to see Emily and her sweet newborn daughter Liesel:

February-- I got really into my Five Things Fridays posts...like really into them. I should bring them back, maybs?

March-- I went to the Long Beach Flea Market with Greg, Amy, and Beatrice, and it rained! We had a blast though, and embraced the elements:

April-- April busy with school stuff, but I did make time for some crafty fun:

May-- My life began to change entirely beginning in May. Well, the end of April really. The relationship I was in ended, and The OC Gazette closed, so my job of two years and relationship of nearly three were suddenly over, and I had no idea what was ahead. Luckily, I had the time to do some traveling. I had an amazing time visiting my friends Ryan & Stephanie and their four boys in Wisconsin. There is something about Wisconsin that feeds my soul, and I feel at home and at peace there with them:

June-- June was a mix of emotions. My grandmother, my Nana, a hero of mine and a dear friend of mine, passed away at age 91. Prior to this, I got to see my friend Elaine in Chicago, and went on a quick trip to Palm Springs with some good friends:

July-- I spent a lot of time at the beach with Stefanie, Chelsea, and Amy, and occasionally my favorite little dude, Levi:

August-- Nicole and I went to the OC Fair (where the goats are always the main attraction for me):

September-- I celebrated my birthday, Blaire's birthday, and moved to the LA area and started a crazy new job:

October-- I visited Ryan & Stephanie and their four boys in Wisconsin again, and had one of the best times ever. We took a weekend trip to Washington Island and had a blast making bonfires and exploring the island.

November-- I did a shine** session with Shannon. It was a beautiful experience, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Shine** is a holistic portrait experience for women. You can read more about it here.

December-- Dressember, of course!

It was a year of restlessness, upheaval, grief, letting go, and letting new things take root. I'm just coming out of a four month long transitional period, and transitioning into a house with three girls in Eagle Rock. I'm excited and scared all at once to see what 2012 holds. One thing I know-- life is an adventure. Sometimes it's quiet, sometimes it's in your face (for good or bad), but either way, it's a beautiful, mysterious journey. It takes a lot of patience and faith to keep moving forward when you don't really know what's ahead or even what you want to be ahead, but there is peace in realizing that no one ever knows what's very far ahead, and it is freeing to let go and let whatever comes come. Meet it with a heart that is light and willing to be amused.

Dressember 2011 Review

This was hand's down the best year of Dressember to date: Over 55 documented participants, and we took a new medium by storm-- instagram! I had a blast this year, and the month flew by faster than ever.

Here's a look at my Dressember 2011:

Over the 31 days, I wore 24 dresses. Last year, I wore the same seven dresses restyled all month, and in 2009, the year I started up Dressember, I wore a different dress every day all month. Every year I feel challenged in a new way, and learn to appreciate Dressember for a new reason.

Is it really here? The last day of Dressember?! Another year, another victory. ;)
Which reminds me, the end of Dressember marks the end of 2011 (oh, that? New Years? Right..)

New Year's Eve is a funny holiday. In my experience, there's either nothing going on, or six to ten parties to choose from. This year it's the latter and it's a little overwhelming. I've chosen to stay local and hang out with a few new friends who show potential to become pretty great friends. Tough choice because I'd love to see old friends in OC, but the drive.....I'm not feeling the drive today. Or the other drivers who will inevitably be on the road.

What are your plans? Whatever you end up doing, I hope it's a fun time and that you get to spend it with people you love. Cheers to the happiest new year!

Holy moly, hide the cannoli--- tomorrow is the last day, guys!

I wandered into Foreign Exchange while I was at the mall a couple days ago to exchange something at Nordstrom because there was a sign that said 50% EVERYTHING IN THE STORE. Even though I've not historically had much luck at Foreign Exchange (everything fits a little weirdly there, or a little too tightly, or looks like club wear to me), I DO love sales, and decided to take a gander. I'm glad I did because I found this awesome flowy minty top for an amazing price, and then bought that coppery glittery nail polish for $2, and another vibrant top I might wear tomorrow.

Also, I signed the lease and paid the deposit on the room I'm moving into next month! I'm going to be living in a spacious house in Eagle Rock with three other girls. I'm super excited!!!

You know those people who wash clothes after every single time they've worn it? And those people who would never ever wear the same item of clothing two days in a row? Yeah, well I'm neither of those people. Today's outfit proves it: I'm wearing the under layer dress from yesterday's double Dressember duo. I'm perfectly fine about it. It's not like I sweated in it, or saw the same people. Except everyone on instagram, I suppose, and now all you folks reading here. So the cat's out of the bag: I'm not a person who washes things every single time. Usually every second or third time. And wearing things a couple days in a row is perfectly kosher, in my book. Both are arguably great ways of going green. So there.

So there's a secret to this dress.....

it's TWO DRESSES!

What? Double dressember, what does it mean??
It means I was feeling really creative this morning, folks. Crazy creative, you might say. I had my first day in ten days off yesterday (besides Christmas day), and I started a large scale craft I've been wanting to start, wrote three pages of the pilot script I'm working on, and made myself two great meals. It was a great day to be me, and all that productivity spilled into today and I'm finding myself dressing crazy creative.

It's starting to look like a triple dressember!

This is also a day when I rummaged through my boxes and accessorized-- something that's rare in these transitional days before I have adequate, visible jewelry access again.

Ahoy mateys! In a perfect world, that nautical greeting would be paired with a nautical themed Dressember post, but...my world is far from a perfect one, and my blog follows suit.

Perfect it may not be, but it isn't boring either! This dress is so colorful and fun and I can't stop looking at it. It was a Christmas present from my sister, and although I have no idea where she bought it, I can tell you it's by Element, if that helps. I always forget about skate and surf brands because I do neither of those things (too bad there aren't razor scooter brands, eh?), but they make some really cute things, it turns out. Things that aren't blazoned with logos and brand names.

I'm fighting off a bug today. Literally went to bed at 8:30 last night because my body is trying to fight it off and is so. tired.
I wonder if working again and being on my feet is doing it? Or being around lots of people? Either way, I'm hoping it gets better and not worse by Christmas. Dressember is also considerably less fun when sick....aka you have to go on hiatus because you're in bed in your pjs and that's A-OK. Remember the pajama clause? Pajamas are kosher when sleeping or sick! I hope there's no one out there thinking I'm the Hitler of dresses and telling you guys to where dresses 24/7, even while sleeping and working out and cleaning your bathroom. I'm a realist, folks. Dresses 24/7 isn't possible this side of 1900. Unless you live on a farm and need to wear dresses to hold eggs, and wear flannel nighties to bed. Or maybe you're a Hollywood diva, and dresses to bed and to work out is easy because those tennis dresses are perfect for light work outs, you have people who clean your house for you, and you only wear those lacy, sheer dresses to bed. Props to you both.

And props to the rest of us, for being normal and wearing them when we can and just having FUN with it. That's what Dressember's all about, after all.

This week has been crazypants. I've worked every day since last Friday and it's really wearing on me. I don't get a break until Christmas day! Not complaining though; it's great to be working and I certainly need the cash flow this time of year.

On a brighter note, I'm moving into my new place in just a couple weeks! It's a 4 bedroom house in Eagle Rock (sandwiched between Pasadena and Glendale), and I'll have my own room, with 3 other girls sharing the house. I'm so excited to move, to decorate, to unpack my boxes. Ahhhhh! I have to remind myself to breathe, I'm so excited about it. I've been scouring craig's list for good stuff to fill my room. I have a sort of industrial/metal vision for it...

Today it's starting to really register [finally] that Dressember 21st means it's December 21st (uh, duh), which means Christmas is just a few days away! I have a couple last gifts to get, but they're just gift cards and little things to add to other gifts. How's your shopping coming?

This outfit was unfortunately picked out with a funeral in mind. Last week, we lost a good man, Richard Sabolick. He was sassy and funny and as bright as they come. He will be missed by many.The good news is that he is at home in heaven, finally at peace, and we who loved him will see him again one day.

Dressember: Day 20 of 31

Day 20 is the day of PLAID TIGHTS. Does anything more fascinating exist? Probably, but when I wear these I can stare at them for shockingly long periods of time, which leads me to think they are, in fact, [at least] one of the most fascinating things ever. By now you might be thinking, "Blythe has an exorbitant number of tights," and you're kind of right. Today is all about these glasses. They're one of five pairs in my home try-on from Warby Parker. Have you guys heard about Warby Parker? This one's got me feeling feminine. All the layers and lace and folded silk and pink. Mm! I feel like a soft, delicate lady. There are Dressember days that call for such femininity, and this is one of them!

Funny thing about these tights: I think I got them in 2008, before white tights sort of made a comeback, and I got it in my head that I wanted white tights (I think, in part because of this shoot with Jenny Lewis), but I often get these ideas in my head when things aren't mainstream yet (like socks with heels, for example, or turbans), and I get made fun of, and then they become trends a little later. I don't mean it in a braggy or disgruntled way; but it's actually pretty frustrating to want something that's super hard to find and then suddenly it's everywhere and I don't want it anymore. But whatevs. White tights. Timeless, in my book. Lolita-esque.

Today's look was inspired by the film The Edge of Love (I blogged about it here): over the knee socks, boots, a cardigan and a fedora. I'm enjoying wearing this outfit.

I wore this cardigan yesterday but that's ok, right? I'm someone who doesn't wash clothes every single time I wear them--especially over-layers like cardigans. Maybe every third time. Anyway, my favorite thing about this cardi is the scalloped edging on the cuffs and neckline! So sweet.

Day 15 and it's time for a repeat (I wore this dress on day 1)! There's no shame in repeats, folks! None whatsoever. Which is why last Dressember I wore the same 7 dresses over and over all month to show it could be done, and it could be done with pride and flare. ;)

I like this one (below) because even though the real explanation is bad timing, the funnier explanation is that i'm making like a gangster and saying something like, "don't mess." Or whatever a gangster would say.

I bought this top with a gift card earlier this week, and I have to be honest....I'm excited to wear it with pants. I made it work with a dress because I'm too impatient to wait till January to wear it, but I have a different vision for it that involves pants. Anyway. Found an excuse to break out the blue fishnets! And now I want to challenge myself to find another way of wearing this top during dressember...stay tuned for that.

Dressember: Day 13 of 31

It's day 13! I started doing yoga again this week (after probably 6-12 months of not doing it) and it felt great! That's a bit random to share, but it's something I'm currently excited about. Also, I'm supposed to pick up the renter's agreement/contract for my new place in the next couple days! And I start my new job tomorrow! So, it's a pretty great week all around. I just need to get a leg up on my Christmas shopping....

Speaking of legs, how fun are these tights? I was literally inspired by a little girl in striped tights when I bought these. Well, not when I bought them, before I bought them. But I bought them because I remembered being inspired by the little girl. Oh, you get it.

I should count up how many pairs of tights I have. They're a good investment, I think. And a pretty inexpensive one, depending on where you buy them. Maybe I could do a month of tights. Dressember is kind of also a month of tights, by default.

Lemon Green Beans with Feta

Today I want to share one of my favorite vegetable dishes to make-- it's so tasty and so easy!

Here's what you'll need:
-16 oz fresh green beans
-2 tbsp olive oil
-1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese
-the juice of half a lemon
-salt and pepper

Step one: Steam green beans. I used this method that doesn't call for a basket/colander. Drain water.

Step two: Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet on medium high heat. Add green beans, and cook on medium high for 5-10 minutes, tossing every minute or so with tongs, until all the beans soften. They will start to get brown/black on the edges as they cook, and that's a good sign.

Step three: When the beans appear to be done, add salt and pepper (about a 1/2 teaspoon each) and toss. Squeeze half a fresh lemon over the beans (maybe a little less, depending on the size and juiciness of your lemon, and how much you like lemon).

Step four: Sprinkle feta over the beans, and toss a few times. Turn off the heat and continue tossing with tongs.

Serve and enjoy! Should feed 3-4 people as a side dish. I sometimes make it to eat by itself....I love these beans that much!

Today is one of those days I am accidentally amazingly well color coordinated. That doesn't happen often. Mustard tights are my stand by with this dress (as you can see here, when I wore this dress in Dressember 2009), and then I needed a light layer, and grabbed this blue grey jacket and BOOM! I'm matching. Woops. To tell you the truth, I usually try not to match. There's something that's more interesting to me about mismatched colors and patterns. Why wear the same two colors when you can wear five different ones? You know? That's just how my brain works. Anyway. Today is the same three colors, which is at least more than two...

We're already about a third of the way through....is it weird that that makes me kind of sad? I guess it takes awhile for me to hit my limit with dresses. I was just telling a friend today that dresses are the easiest outfits because they're an entire outfit in one piece. Then you just add layers, depending on the weather.

ok, GUESS WHAT, peeps? I'm about to burst! I'm too excited not to share this: I gave my thesis project presentation yesterday and it went awesome! What that means, in a nutshell is: I am done with my M.A. My M flippin' A! wowzz. And today I start training for a new job! Day 9! Ok, a word on moving: we all can agree it's pretty sucky, right (the boxes, the misplacing of everything, the not knowing anyone and missing all the people you do know back in the place where you can drive to the grocery store without getting lost)? But after awhile, when you accept the suckiness of the the boxes, the missing people, and the loneliness of it, you kind of get used to it, put away the kleenex and ween yourself off live streaming 30 Rock so often and go meet people. And sure, there are a lot of pretty lousy people, and it takes time to find the really great people you can click and chuckle with, but it turns out they're in the place you've moved to too, just like the whole cherished group of ones you left in the last place.

What I mean to say is, guys.....I'm making friends! I'm setting in my social roots and actually have weekend plans (more often than not) again! It's like a breath of fresh air to the little dormant social butterfly inside me.

Happy Thursday, and happy day number 8! Things I'm currently excited about: the gym (I joined a gym! I have a free session with a trainer today), my sister's wedding (it's in June, and I'm the maid of honor! I'm going to go order my dress this afternoon), my new job (training starts Saturday!), my MA Thesis Project presentation (tomorrow, eek!), and my approaching move (next month!). It's a busy time, but busy in a great way.

The Edge of Love

I just watched The Edge of Love on netflix. It's based loosely on the life and loves of the poet Dylan Thomas and takes place during WWI in England and Wales. The story was compelling, but the costume and set styling were what really captured my attention.

Now I'll be on the hunt for some over the knee socks, Hunter boots to pair them with, floral dresses, intricately knit cardigans, and I might just be breaking out my red lipstick after a possibly unmerited hiatus...

I'm not sure what face that is in the photo above, but there it is. A funny element of Dressember is the photo-taking, if you choose to go full force and participate in that part of it too. The posing can be awkward at first, but you start to get used to it after awhile.......that's assuming you're not a professional model or whatever (which there are prof models participating this year, btw...*cough- paisley- cough*), in which case, posing ain't no thang, but for the rest of us, this is a new, potential barrier to get across and accustomed to.

Anyway. That's meant to be encouraging. It's Dressember 7th! We're already one week into this! I feel like this is the biggest, funnest Dressember yet. Today will probably be the last day of holding up as many fingers as Dressember days...maybe it's something that bored you by day two, but I'm just now getting bored with it after taking these photos, so it's time indeed.

So, yesterday turned out to be a pretty great day to be Blythe Hill. There isn't a surplus on those lately, so I try to savor them when they manage to happen. I was finally able to land a holiday job (that will hopefully turn into an after-the-holidays job, since I have plans to move mid-January)! I also had a great meeting with my MA project advisor to go over the finalized illustrated pages of the three children's books I wrote (and had three artist friends illustrate). Then, I had dinner with my pal Melissa, and then coffee with Dayna, Monica, and Lindsey. Such a fun day.

Dressember: Day 5 of 31

Day five and I'm feeling good about this. I remember my first Dressember, back in 2009, and feeling daunted by the 'task' of wearing a dress all month. Last year was of course daunting (in a fun way) because I gave myself the challenge of wearing the same seven dresses all month long, styled differently. This year, I'm feeling good about the whole thing-- about dresses for a month, about not having a challenge this time around. It's just fun. Which is what it's supposed to be, bee tee dubs.

Dressember is all about having fun! Embracing feminity! Embracing creativity! Finding that it's not so hard after all to wear dresses!

I love this skirt because it has pockets and the pockets are scalloped!

This is for all you doubting Thomases who think I'm trying to pull a fast one on you:

On the left: See? It's really a dress, under a skirt. That's allowed, remember? So are pants under dresses.
On the right: My attempt at signing "Too legit," but my left hand's got a mind of its own.

You're going to be seeing these boots quite a bit, I think. They're just great with the colder weather, and I like the way they look with tights usually. Also, can I just say that if you don't have a pair of leather boots, you should think about investing in some? They're awesome. They're the only boots I've ever owned that have gotten better with age. They're so buttery and soft and full of character. Mmm. I got these bad boys on sale at Nordstrom for like $50. Best buy of the last five years, maybs.

The power's back on! It came back on early this morning, and I woke up to the sound of the heater running, which was glorious. Then I slept a few more hours. Ah, Saturday.

Hours after the power came on, the thermostat said that the house was 56 degrees, which means it was even colder before the heat kicked in! Makes me feel more justified (and less of a wimp) for using my robe as an additional blanket in the night. Brr.

Anyone recognize this dress from last year's Dressember? It was one of the seven dresses I had in my rotation during the month!

Dressember: Day 2 of 31

For those of you who haven't heard, here in the LA area we've been experiencing a fairly large scale power outage. There was a big windstorm (70-90 mph winds, "hurricane level winds," I heard them say on KCRW...yikes) on Wednesday night, and now there are about 200-300,000 of us without power, since two nights ago. To illustrate how not used to natural disasters I am, I still drove downtown to meet the photographer I had planned to meet (only, after driving twice as long because of out-of-power stoplights slowing traffic severely, to find out her studio was also without power), and then, when that fell through, I still drove to Target (which was open, somehow), and bought ingredients to make the pie I plan to make for Shannon's birthday this weekend. Then I got home and put the newly purchased heavy cream in the still-unpowered refrigerator. Brilliant.

I stayed off the road the rest of the day until last night, when I had bible study, and the drive was something else. Since the street lights were off (because the power was off), I nearly hit 2-3 huge trees that had fallen in the road since I didn't see them until I got close to them. In the night darkness, the dark green piles of tree just blended into the dark. That should give you ad idea of how bad the storm was: when massive trees blocking three of four lanes on a fairly major road (Huntington Drive, aka route 66, between Arcadia and South Pasadena) remain unmarked nearly 20 hours after the storm happened, you know the crews have their hands full clearing hundreds of other trees just like those.

I'm currently sharing a table at Starbuck's (one that has power and internet) with a nice lady who is explaining the situation to someone who I assume must be a relative. Let's hope we all get power soon, because this place is packed and totally beyond max capacity....although that's the least of anyone's worries at this point.

All that to say, Dressember will not be thwarted by natural disasters [yet]!
Although there's no heat in my house and I lack the ability to take a hot shower, I will continue to dress for success. Yesterday's lesson in layers is put to practice again.

My family and I emailed each other our Christmas lists, and I wanted to share mine with you because I found some gems worth sharing!

this balloon print and this feather print are so beautiful! I love how they're printed on paper from vintage books. Ex Libris Journals has a lot of great book art-- it was hard to choose my favorites!

I asked for a set of blank babushka/matryoshka/nesting dolls so that I can paint them myself! Wouldn't that make a fun crafting day?

This little notebook is really funny to me. I've never punched anyone in the face, and rarely feel the desire to, but the sentiment is a funny one. And what better way to channel your anger than by writing about it?

This goat print is adorbs! I have this crazy dream of one day moving to Wisconsin and starting my own goat dairy farm, but until then....this print will do. :P

I love this print because I have always found this quote by Helen Keller really beautiful and encouraging.

It's here! Happy Dressember to all!

Today's is a mini lesson in layering (or "Dressembering in Colder Climates," one might call it). Notice the flannel under the dress, and the wool tights? Two very key pieces if the air is chilly in your corner of the globe. I also recommend a thermal/long underwear shirt under the flannel, or multiple tanks/shirts, and possibly doubling up on the tights. Depends how cold we're talking. The spot of sunny so. Cal I'm in is currently in the midst of a consistently 70 degree weather week, which is to say, I'm not hiding any other layers than the ones you see. Unless my shockingly pale skin under those tights counts as another layer, which I don't think we will today.

Dressember Info

Dressember is: a month of dresses! The rules are simple: wear dresses all month (with the exception of pajamas, work out clothes, and if/when your job requires you to wear pants).
You're allowed to repeat dresses.
You're not allowed to wear skirts (unless you're wearing a skirt over a dress).
Take a picture of yourself in your dress each day, and post the pics to your blog either daily or weekly (or semi-weekly) and to Flickr (see next paragraph for the link to our Flickr group).

This is largely on the honor's system, so no taking multiple pics of yourself on the same day and then prancing around in pants the rest of the month! That would be cheating. Duh. Besides, you'd be missing the spirit of Dressember: reclaiming/embracing/celebrating femininity! And just being fun and not taking life so seriously all the time.

In 2009, I wore a different dress all 31 days (had no idea I had so many dresses until doing so). In 2010, I took it up a notch and wore the same 7 dresses repeatedly throughout the month, styled in new ways. With 31 days, each of the 7 dresses was repeated either 4 or 5 times. This year, I plan to be loosey goosey and just do whatever-- repeat dresses when I want, but not feel confined to wearing the same ones (although I recommend it as a fun way to push your creativity!)
I plan to do a few cold weather examples for those of you in colder climates (layers! wool tights! scarves!)-- should be fun!

I found this photo on sparkles and pretending, and LOVE the quote. It makes me think of a revelation I had this past year; I used to think of one day having babies and cringe. I've always wanted to be a mom, but the thought of having babies made me feel claustrophobic (they just cry and cry and poop and eat and cry and cry). I assumed that because many women express that the baby-rearing years involve sheer self-sacrifice and getting little sleep and craving adult interaction, that it would be a period of life I'd just have to grit my teeth and bear. In other words, I assumed that because so many women seem to suffer through this period of life, I would too. It wasn't until this past year, after talking with my good friend Stephanie (who is mom to four boys under age 9), and to one of my favorite professors (who is a single mom to a one year old), that my perspective was radically altered and I was given new hope for motherhood.

Out of well-meaning concern, I asked Stephanie how she's doing being mom to four kids at such young ages. I had expected her to tell me she's suffering through it, that's she's desperately trying not to lose herself, and ask me to pray for her. To my surprise, she explained that her greatest frustration is not having enough time to be the mother she wants to be to each one of them. I was blown away. I never knew it was even possible to take on such a selfless view toward motherhood. It made me cry with hope for my own journey as a mom someday.

A few months after my conversation with Stephanie, I had another life-changing talk with my professor about her experience as a single mom. In spite of the difficulties I and anyone might assume she's faced in her situation, her chronicling of her experience was with an attitude of gratitude; where others would weep in the corner, she had adopted an attitude of fascination at each tiny step of development her son displayed. On sleepless nights, she's embraced his need of her as a honorable role she's been blessed with. I was deeply moved when she told me how many people told her she would feel a certain way when certain things happened and she profoundly said, "No one can ever tell you how you're going to feel." The words still bring tears to my eyes.

All that to say, through these amazing women, who have looked at their roles as mothers with gratitude and awe instead of feeling encumbered, I've learned to hope that I will one day choose to embrace motherhood in much the same way. I'm now praying for a similar hope to be ignited regarding my view on marriage (which now seems to me claustrophobic, stale, stagnant, terrifying....)

I don't know what negative views you might have toward parenthood, marriage, working full time, or anything else at all, but I hope this serves to encourage you that you don't have to feel a certain way about something just because you've been told/shown a negative example. After all, no one can ever tell you how you're going to feel in any given situation.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of joining Ryan & Stephanie's family getaway to Washington Island, Wisconsin (a small island off the tip of the "thumb" of Wisconsin, in Lake Michigan). I can't begin to explain how therapeutic the weekend was for me-- to get away from it all with some of my most favorite people in the world simply did good for my soul.

Today's photos are from our visit to School House Beach, the island's most iconic beach, famous for its round white stones (so iconic that you'll get slapped with a fine if you try to take any stones home with you) that are unique to five beaches in the world (one of the other four being the beach in Nice, France). The clarity of the water, coupled with the beauty of the stones, made the whole scene a bit surreal and dreamlike.

I upgraded to the iphone a couple months ago, and I think my favorite feature (other than the maps app) is Instragram. For those of you outside of the iphone world (good for you btw; I resisted as long as possible): Instagram is like tumblr, or like twitter, but with photos. You can follow whoever you want (or request to follow those with private accounts) and see the photos they choose to post. Another fun element is that there are 16 effects you can put on your photos before posting them.

Life in limbo

Yesterday was rough. Really really rough. Suffice it to say, I spent the day with soggy eyes and one of those piercing headaches caused by the dehydration of hours of crying. It was rough.

There is so much blank space in my life, and the path ahead is so undefined-- it leaves a lot of potential for exciting things, but also a lot of space to worry, be afraid, and feel alone. There's a lot of temptation to crawl under a rock and be paralyzed; to let life pass by around me, or to move back into a space of comfort and familiarity. It feels like a big fat fork in the road, where my life is either about to slowly fall to a million pieces or gather supernaturally into something really amazing.

In the meantime, I'm sorting out who I am and what I want, for what feels like the thousandth time. Giving myself permission to dream big, to hope for right relationships and a job I was made to do.
I posted months ago about retraining ourselves to hope; to trust ourselves and the dreams inside ourselves. There's so much in the world to disappoint and discourage; I'm beginning to think that success is accepting the mess, accepting the disappointments, and pressing on anyway. Not letting the closed doors and mistakes define the road ahead of us. Success is persistence.

I hear a lot lately about the idea of "learning how to live." The problem of living-- the mystery of living, and how to live well. What if living well really just means accepting that life is a mystery, and choosing to hope, choosing joy and hoping for good in people and in yourself instead of shutting down and shutting others out? Not blaming life for mistakes or obstacles, but getting up, brushing off the dirt, and keeping on with a smiling heart. Seeing that every little thing, good or bad, is really good in the larger sense for daily transforming us into who we need to be to progress.

Maybe a bit heavy for a Wednesday, but there it is.

Shoes of choice: Saltwater Sandals

You know how everyone outside of southern California eagerly awaits the arrival of spring, and then the arrival of summer? We don't do that in southern California, since it's perpetually summer weather, but what we DO do is eagerly await the arrival of fall. I use the term "fall" loosely here; it's not a REAL fall- not the same chilled air, see your breath as a cloud as night when you exhale, and the leaves change colors fall, but the temperature does drop a little, and everyone gets excited about pumpkin flavors mingling with their coffee drinks and pastries. As some of you know, I grew up in Seattle, WA, where there is a pretty glorious fall and the colors are vibrant and the nights are chilly and Halloween involves at least three layers of clothing. It was my most favorite season, and ever since I moved to Orange County in high school, it's been one of the things I have missed most. It stays hot until Thanksgiving around these parts. Just this past week, in OCTOBER, for pete's sake, we had a couple 100 degree days.

After ten years, I think I'm finally used to it (ie less disappointed by it), but there's still a deep part of me that longs to return to living someplace with a true fall. This is probably among the top 5 reasons I always escape to either Seattle or Wisconsin for a quick visit most Octobers- that and the fact that October is the cheapest month of the whole year to fly. Fun fact.

Lost in Transition

I keep pestering myself about this blog, feeling that I should post something, that so much is going on, surely I have things to write about. Work is inconsistent, so I certainly have time to blog in between jobs. To be honest, the issue is that I feel unsettled. My life is still 70% boxed up, I've been staying with my brother and his wife for three weeks now, and I have no idea what the next step is. It's a hard space to blog out of, but I'm realizing it's necessary. Blogs shouldn't be about having everything perfectly put together and figured out and presented to the world in a pretty package (at least, I've never meant for my blog to be like that). Let's face it: life is messy. Picture perfect is an illusion.

"The perfect job" also seems like an illusion to me at this point. I started my current job as an assistant wardrobe stylist in August. The job sounds pretty glamorous, but it's not: I work 15 hour days (and am paid a day rate, not hourly), do thousands of dollars in returns by myself, and it involves way more manual labor than I ever imagined it would (lifting, loading, and organizing thousands of dollars of clothing). It's a freelance position, which means I have a lot of time on my hands when I'm not working. Time I usually spend looking at apartments, wondering if I'll be getting enough work to pay rent, wondering if I even want this job, and daydreaming about starting up my own goat dairy farm in Wisconsin (seriously. someday, I hope to). I also occasionally get motivated to go on fun little adventures in LA:

I guess the point is: life is a journey. Sometimes you're on a super smooth, straight, well-lit portion of the path, and other times things are much less defined, and require a lot more faith that good things are around the bend. I want to reach out to you in this less defined time of my life as an equally beautiful time, though much less seemingly perfect, it's maybe more raw and real.

Also, on a different not, I bought a tripod, so outfit photos will be coming tomorrow! At long last. Anyone thinking about Dressember yet?

Alexa Chung's done it again; her latest collaboration with Madewell has me swooning-- and I'm sure I'm not alone. The collection is a fresh take on vintage styles, chock-full of artistic touches, like painterly flower prints, and intricate detailing, like pretty laces and romantic pleats. It's well suited for this fall's trends, and yet it simultaneously boasts a timelessness that ensures any of these pieces the ability to carry over past this season as staple pieces in a lifelong wardrobe.

Take the blouse below; the peter pan collar, streamlined fit, and the mini dot pattern make this a classic go-to piece for fall and beyond. Pairing it with '70s inspired, high-waist, exposed button fly corduroy shorts mixes multiple vintage eras and makes it a fresh and timely look for fall.

This past week was a good, but crazy week. It started on Monday with Blaire's birthday surprise scavenger hunt at Disneyland:

The house is being tented for termites tomorrow, so I'll be able to get my remaining belongings later in the week. I'm still on the hunt for an apartment, and in the meantime I'm staying with my brother and his wife in east LA.

Last night was my first night officially moved, and my sis-in-law Liz and I celebrated by playing scrabble. I won. I have to revel in it because I think this might have been the first (and maybe last time) I've beaten her at anything.

I think it's time to let you guys in on a big change going on in my life. I alluded to getting a job and moving, and I wanted to get those things rolling before I said much about them here; now I'm ready to share the exciting news with you: I'm moving to LA! A little over a week ago, I began working as an assistant to a wardrobe stylist based in Silverlake. I worked literally 14 hours a day every day last week (all my posts were pre-scheduled, if you're wondering how I managed to still post), and slept an average of 5 hours per night. It's been a whirlwind, and I've had to remind myself that I wanted this, but overall, when it comes down to it, I know I'm lucky to have this opportunity and excited to see what it leads to.

So now I'm onto the apartment hunt! An adventure of its own. I apologize in advance for sporadic posting over the next few weeks as I get settled and adjusted.

This Portland-based company makes thin wood covers for iphones, ipads, and more, at a price worth guffawing over. Mi Casa (Costa Mesa)

I took some pictures of my friend Kristina last week, and I love the way they came out. Since I'm living in a house that's for sale, it's pretty empty and sparsely decorated, which makes for a pretty intriguing backdrop for these photos.

Shining in the sun

Stefanie and I had a much needed beach day a few days ago at Laguna. You might recognize the top shot as the same little nook where Chelsea, Amy, and I camped out in a beach post about a month ago (here).

It's hard to believe the summer's coming to an end, but I'm glad (now that I have a job) to have had the time off to soak it up. It was a good three and a half months of unemployment, but I'm ready to get back to the grind. It might sound funny to say I enjoyed unemployment (most people don't), but since it wasn't the first time I've experienced it, I knew to just enjoy it as a chapter and trust it would be just that: a chapter. there are good and bad things to every chapter of life, and I've learned to try to focus on the positives, and recognize the things I'll miss once the chapter's over. It's a good system; I recommend it.

It probably seems like I've been spending a lot of time in Laguna; it's true, but I think that's mainly because of summer. It's just a summertime city, in my mind.

Katsuya (Laguna Beach)

Another one of the restaurants I visited for Locale is Katsuya in Laguna Beach. It's the newest sister location to four LA-based Katsuyas (there's also one in Houston). It was AMAZING.

Five Rare Animals

You Never Knew Existed

1) Monito del Monte. The name means 'little mountain monkey' in Spanish. How flippin cute is this little guy? I thought I'd start the list off with the ridiculously cute. Unless you don't like wide eyed little mice-like guys....but if you do, read more about him here.

2) Bilby. If a rabbit and a mole procreated? More here.

3) Kiwa Hirsuta. I'm kinda creeped out by his super long hairy snapping arms, but there's also something human-like and friendly about the whole thing. Too many Disney movies? Read about this guy here.

4) Kakapo. The strangest, portliest parrot on the planet. Doesn't he kind of look like a beaver? More here.

5) Goblin Shark. Eeeeee-- cue the creepy Jaws music, right? And yet, there's something kind of cute and endearing about this fellow. Am I crazy? He just kinda looks dopey and smiley and I can't help but like him more for it. More about him here.
